Very basic cornice designs, like the 'small egg and dart' were used to finish the edges of ceiling designs and serve well. The only difference is that cornices are installed first and the ceiling panels cut to butt against them rather than them being installed last to overlap ceilings which was the pattern for plaster and plasterboard ceilings.
